Alfalfa Variety Selection

Introduction

In California, alfalfa varieties are tested over a wide range of environments, from 3-cut systems (dormant varieties) in the North, to 9 cut systems (non-dormant varieties) in the South. We grow varieties from very heavy to very light soils.

The Alfalfa Acreages Map on the left illustrates areas where alfalfa is grown in California. Select one to view variety data summaries for that area.

Biotechnology and Roundup Ready Alfalfa

Glyphosate-tolerant (GT) Alfalfa or Roundup-Ready Alfalfa (RRA) was approved for planting in the US in February, 2011. RRA is a genetically engineered variety of alfalfa, which can be used safely in combination with the herbicide 'glyphosate' (Roundup). RRA was originally deregulated and commercialized in 2005 but then a lawsuit in 2007 rescinded the deregulation, halting further plantings.
